02 - 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
03 - ½ teaspoon salt

→ Fat

04 - 1 tablespoon vegetable shortening

→ Liquid

05 - 1/3 cup plus 1 tablespoon warm water

→ For Frying and Serving

06 - Oil for frying
07 - Powdered sugar and honey, or cinnamon sugar, for serving

# Step-by-Step Guide:

01 - In a medium bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Add vegetable shortening and cut it into the dry ingredients using two forks or a pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually incorporate the warm water, stirring until a cohesive dough forms. Knead in the bowl for several minutes until smooth.
02 - Cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap and allow the dough to rest at room temperature for 20 minutes.
03 - Pour 1 to 2 inches of oil into a medium saucepan and heat over medium heat until the oil reaches frying temperature.
04 - Roll the dough on a lightly floured surface into a square approximately 1/8 inch thick. Cut the dough into nine equal squares by making three vertical and three horizontal cuts.
05 - Carefully lower one square of dough into the hot oil using tongs. It will sink then float to the surface. While frying, gently spoon hot oil over the dough to encourage puffing. Cook for 30 seconds on one side, then flip and cook another 30 seconds until golden brown and puffed. Remove and drain on paper towels. Repeat with remaining pieces.
06 - Dust with powdered sugar and drizzle honey or sprinkle with cinnamon sugar before serving.
